Nymphaea - a retro-static 3D stereogram

Nymphaea is retro-static art. In the 1990s, it seemed that every shopping mall had a kiosk selling books and calendars of "MagicEye" 3D illusions. These 3D illusions, or stereograms, feature 2D repeating patterns that reveal a 3D image when viewed properly. Nymphaea takes this idea to a new level, incorporating a new type of pattern that can be cut into layers of wood.

Old Made New For the first time, a stereogram is formed with 3D cutouts in wood. Although the same stereogram generating process was used to create the initial pattern for Nymphaea, new techniques were developed in order to turn the preliminary on-screen pattern into a physically buildable work of art.		Hidden 3D Image When viewed with the right focus, an image of a water lily and lily pads emerge from Nymphaea's wood patterns. The darker lily pads appear farther back in the 3D image, while the lighter areas of the water lily appear closer. Find out how it works.		Manual vs. CNC Nymphaea's plans come with two designs. One is a dual layer design intended for CNC machining, laser cutting, and 3D printing (shown above). The second is a simpler, single layer design intended for manual cutting. This manual version has circular holes instead of elongated slots, to make the pattern easy to cut using just a drill press.

The sample plans are a snippet of the purchased version. They contain a list of the tools needed, specifications for all required hardware, as well a sample wood pattern.

The sample DXF file and STL file can be used to test CAM software compatibility. For builders with CNC machines or 3D printers, the purchased version of the plans contains DXF files and STL files for all wood patterns.

Plans are sold securely through PayPal and are delivered through Payloadz.

Plywood parts can be cut manually with printable patterns in PDF format, or they can be cut with a CNC machine using the included DXF or STL files.

Plans contain two PDF document sizes:
• 8.5" x 11" paper for instructions
• 11" x 17" paper for patterns
